SEXUALITY

Florence queer Festival

The FLORENCE QUEER FESTIVAL is the most important festival in Tuscany dedicated to queer culture (LGBTQ), organized by the IREOS association of Florence.

Florence and Italy itself, is often viewed as a Catholic dominated world. Prior to coming to Florence, many students voiced concerns about being LGBTQ in a city that didn’t seem to offer many spaces for LGBTQ individuals. However, this event thoroughly erased these worries.

The Florence Queer Film Festival is a week-long open event, in which people view globally made LGBTQ films. NYU students even had the amazing chance to judge these films and announce the winners!

Mariah Harilall, a member of IDBE and an attendee of the event, reflects cheerily on her experience:

“The Florence Queer Film Festival was absolutely amazing! All the films were outstanding, and it was great to see so many people there to support the community. Additionally, there were many chances to interact with other individuals, which led to fun nights out at pizzerias with new friends, finding and making connections with people who ended up being guest speakers at our campus. It was an all around great event and I still have the lapel pins they gave out! Students should definitely go next fall if they get the chance.”
